Course: Intro to Engineering for Elementary Educators

Description: EiE’s three-part online professional development series introduces elementary educators to the concepts of engineering and technology and prepares educators to facilitate EiE unit(s) with their students. Each 90-minute session is facilitated by an experienced EiE PD provider, and participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning in corresponding 30-45 minute follow-up activities. This interactive online learning experience engages participants through web-based discussions, classroom videos, and personal reflection. Educators will receive an EiE Teacher Guide of their choice along with a certificate of completion.

  • Session 1: What is Technology? What is Engineering?
    • Participants will engage in activities and discussion regarding the similarities and differences between technology and engineering.
  • Session 2: Engineering in the Elementary Classroom
    • Participants will be introduced to EiE’s five-step Engineering Design Process and unique unit structure.
  • Session 3: Preparing for Implementation
    • Participants will discuss considerations for classroom implementation of a problem-based curriculum such as materials management, student and teacher perceptions of failure, and fostering critical thinking and communication skills.

In this session, you will analyze a range of lesson scenarios that incorporate Next Generation Science and Engineering Standards along with Common Core Math content to determine the attributes necessary to create meaningfully integrated lessons.

In this session, you will view clips for the EiE video library that will allow you a peek into a real elementary classroom where a teacher is using effective questioning strategies, You will leave equipped with questioning strategies you can use immediately wiht your students during problem-solving STEM activities.

Getting Started with EiE: Materials Management

In this session, you will get a first-hand glance at the free sesources availble on our website that will help you manage the materials necessary for engaging in hands-on engineering activities. We'll explore considerations for constructing base models and testing stations along with ideas for materials sourcing, storage, and distribution. You will leave this session with confidence to manage materials for a problem-based engineering curriculum.
